We’re always busy at the Ideas Foundation, whether it’s with our own Projects, getting involved in supporting others in the creative industry, or working with Government. Whatever it takes to promote practical creativity. Take a look at what we’ve been up to recently, below.
A group of our artists and photographers including Clive Booth and Elicia McKenie from Disrupt Space art attended the Farnborough International Airshow 2022 to support @amosbursary students capture the stories of people involved in the aviation sector and to look at stories that can promote engineering to others.
The day involved in showcasing the world of aerospace and inspires the next generation of pioneers with an array of activities that look to the future, including the flying and static displays, interactive hands-on activities, access to the trade exhibition, innovation showcase, a dedicated careers hub and inspirational speakers.
“Yesterday I had the fantastic opportunity to attend the Farnborough Airshow 2022! I participated in this event with my fellow AMOS peers alongside Max Auer and Stephen Brooks who I'm sure had as much fun as I did!
We saw some extraordinary aircraft as well as many of the companies involved in crafting their components. From seeing an actual electric motor that could power electric/hybrid planes Evolito Ltd and seeing the water-based release system of an ejection seat Martin-Baker Aircraft Co Ltd I learnt so much about the future of aviation and how we can be part of a great advancement into more efficient and sustainable aircraft fighting climate change (ZeroAvia).”

Last year we could only create a virtual celebration of our work inspiring students with creativity. This isn't just about the arts but the skills that creative education builds - resilience, confidence, time management and career awareness. Last year, we provided creativity kits for students - full of different great prompts and materials to support the students. These prompts are available for other organisations to use.
Our Yorkshire partners have worked with fantastic arts organisations in New York City - sharing an international experience that we hope will encourage them on their own creative journeys to inspired places. On the 12th July at Leeds Playhouse we we’re able to host the final year cultural runway celebrating the creativity of so many young people from Keighley, Castleford and Leeds.
Thanks so much to all our partners and the people behind the scenes who have committed to making this four year programme so impactful.

And the final of the portraits created as a result of the #FestivalofCommunities with Queen Mary University of London Ideas Foundation workshop funded by #Ingenious award from Royal Academy of Engineering
I love this portrait because it shows how #creativity is important for mental health and also as a way of developing skills that transferrable. And I love this too because it shows how careers and learning evolve. Dr Zara is a resident obstetrician who is choosing to follow a further PHd so she can save even more babies lives using engineering and technology. Impressive and inspiring on so many different levels. Thanks @michaelhcockerham for capturing the story in words and images and Zara for being such an amazing role model and photographic model.

International photographer Michael Cockerham and the Ideas Foundation created a digital storytelling workshop at Queen Mary's Festival of Communities to help engineers see each other's worlds.
The creative & culture teams built a digital arts studio in the engineering foyer to teach the audience storytelling techniques and how to make a live electronic portrait of an engineer.
The engineers, doctors and scientists were asked questions about their lives, the challenges and how they discovered their careers.
Pryanka Chadha who is an engineer spoke openly about her journey from school to university, industry and her life at home. After working in Sweden and China, Pryanka joined Tina's research team and is investigating how air pollution affects the unborn baby during pregnancy. She is a Doctoral Scholar (EngD) funded by the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Data Centric Engineering https://www.qmul.ac.uk/dce/ and is developing tools in machine learning to prevent preterm birth and help save babies and mother's lives.

Today the Ideas Foundation spent an amazing day at Queen Mary University of London. Working with leading photographer, Michael Cockerham to help tell the story of what engineers do in word and images.
The workshop helped to give the opportunity to learn how interview technique and photography can challenge preconceptions about who is a typical engineer.
Stay tuned for more!

A huge thank you to @clearchanneluk for giving students a voice during the royal celebrations and to everyone who supported us making this a success.
Schools and colleges from across the country – Cumbria, North Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Somerset, London, Leeds and Manchester participated in a range of digital storytelling workshops – working alongside leading photographers such as Canon Ambassador Clive Booth, Canon volunteers Dean Hodgson and Martin Diamond and supported by Peter Thomas from the National Association for the Teaching of English. Students were offered the opportunity to create images using Canon kit. The projects empowered young people to create posters showing how they can celebrate kindness in their communities.
Hope, optimism, neighbourhoods and communities are key to this celebration year. Said Heather MacRae, CEO of the Ideas Foundation. “We look forward to seeing how talented young people from across the country will create images, words and pictures that celebrate The Queen’s values of kindness, commonwealth, and inclusivity.”
10 winning images were proudly displayed on Clear Channel’s digital Out of Home screens across the country, giving a voice to UK students during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

Here is the picture taken by students at Beacon Hill School that is being displayed on @clearchanneluk digital screens nationwide, giving them a voice during the royal celebrations.
Beacon Hill School is set in a small rural town of Aspatria. It is a very small single form secondary school that is partnered with Solway Community School. Students are mixed ability and because of the isolation and small size of the school don’t often get enrichment activities from large external companies outside of the region. Solway Community School is a one form entry secondary school in the seaside village of Silloth overlooking the Firth of Solway. It is one of the most northerly schools in England.
Eva Blacklock Year 7 at Beacon Hill
Eva has specific learning needs but engaged wonderfully in all the day had to offer.
She gave a big thumbs up when asked how she felt about her picture being chosen and was very happy when she found out about it. The highlight of the day for her was when she got to make her crown. She remembers having the picture taken because she was throwing juice over Mrs Bolt.

Amos Bursary Trust is a charity that ensures talented young people of African and Caribbean descent have the opportunity to excel in education and beyond! The picture was created during a Saturday school hosted at Linklaters in London with students aged 16 – 19.
The students are:
Aaliyah Cumberbatch, Osiris Wilkinson, Divine Agumba, Emmanuel Essel, Osiris Wilkinson, Malick Abdullah, Janetbest Hamu Kayiwa, Lorraine Wireko Brobbey, Rebecca Gouro,
Divine Agumba
“I am glad that my team's idea got picked to go on the billboards for the Queen's Jubilee. It is honestly very nerve racking having my face on billboards across the country but I am proud of myself for being part of it.”
Emmanuel Essel
“I am so excited about our work as the Amos Bursary will be on digital billboards nationally and I am honestly amazed that our hard work paid off. Being part of a picture, and therefore a story, is harder than you think.”
Lorraine Wireko Brobbey
“I am so happy to find out that my face will be shown nationally. It’s a way for me to speak out to those who are particularly younger than me that you can do anything as long as you put your mind to it. It’s also way for me to encourage other STEM people to pursue hobbies outside of STEM.”

Schools and colleges from across the country – Cumbria, North Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Somerset, London, Leeds and Manchester have participated. Over 600 students aged 11- 19 took part in a range of digital storytelling workshops – working alongside leading photographers such as Canon Ambassador Clive Booth, Canon volunteers Dean Hodgson and Martin Diamond and supported by Peter Thomas from the National Association for the Teaching of English. Students were offered the opportunity to create images using Canon kit. The projects empowered young people to create posters showing how they can celebrate kindness in their communities.
Naomi Goude, Head of Creative Arts at Bridgewater and Taunton College said:
Due to Covid, students have missed out on opportunities to be creative. They need to have an opportunity to experiment with ideas. This opportunity gives them an opportunity to work in teams to create high quality work.
We are still buzzing from the workshop. It was an absolute privilege to work with so many creative professionals and we saw our students potential and creativity in new ways. The project was multi-layered so students were able to develop ideas, use cameras, work as teams, create copy and think about what makes their community special. Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School is very proud to have been chosen by the Platinum Jubilee Pageant to work with The Ideas Foundation on a creative brief into schools across the UK that celebrate the values that Her Majesty The Queen represents.
Under the theme of the ‘Commonwealth of Kindness’ our students were invited to develop ideas that celebrate the values of Her Majesty. The Queen has said in her Platinum Jubilee Statement in February 2022 that she wants young people to have a sense of hope and opportunity’.
Students who worked on the poster
Ksenia, Ivan, Andrii
Ksenia who are in the picture said:
“Hello, our names are Ksenia and Ivan, we're from Ukraine. This is the second time the war has started for us. We were born in Donbas and when the war began in 2014 we were forced to flee to the central part of Ukraine, the city of Poltava. Now we have had to run away from danger again.
Physically, mentally, emotionally these experiences were really hard.. The war was going on for a longer time than we thought it would last. We had to find a safe place to stay as it got more and more dangerous.
My family is really grateful for the opportunity to be here, because now we finally feel safe, we can study, work, and help other people from Ukraine. Our thanks to the government, the Queen and citizens of the United Kingdom for giving us a place where we can stay and have shelter above our heads and nice food.
Ivan: I liked the whole process from the beginning to the end. I came up with an idea of hands, then Ksenia and Andrey developed it and, in the end, we had a really deep and nice sketch. Also, I enjoyed taking this photograph, it was a great experience.”

The Manchester College is one of the largest further education colleges in the country and has won a number of awards for their work in promoting creative education alongside the Ideas Foundation. The students are between the ages of 16-19 and are currently studying on the Level 3 UAL Creative Media Production and Technology. The students are delighted that their work has been chosen and really enjoyed working with the Ideas Foundation and Canon professionals to produce photographs for the Platinum Jubilee Pageant that celebrate the Queens 70 years of service.
Student in the photo is Divano Gordon-Malcolm
The team that worked on that photoshoot – Divano Gordon and Jordan-Louis Chisholm
The students that also worked with them on the shoot are Mya Ellis, Marcus Hough, Paris Bate, Isabella Ekwugha and Conner Perry.
Quote from Divano
‘The chance to work with the professionals was an eye opener for me. I learned how to use natural light to work in my favour and to better tell a story. This experience has really helped me to understand how use light better to frame a person or a subject. I now have more confidence in using natural lighting, reflectors and diffusers to control the light in a more efficient way.’
The poster created by The Manchester College students will be displayed at Asda, Eastlands, Manchester.
